We are committed to provide quality education and supportive services to children and families. A team of caring professionals with diverse educational and human services backgrounds carries out this commitment.

OUR HISTORY

Urban Strategies Head Start was originated in 1982 by Urban Strategies, Inc., a not-for-profit community-based organization. The program began operation in 1982 with 78 children and their families, initially, at 1405 Bushwick Avenue. The idea for the opening of a Head Start program was inspired by the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm The program was moved to current location after Urban Strategies, Inc. took over the NAACP Day Care Center which was located at 1091 Sutter Avenue.   Since its inception, Urban Strategies Head Start has served about 3,500 children and families.

OVERVIEW

Urban Strategies Head Start is a not-for-profit child care agency serving low income families and children of the East New York area of Brooklyn. Our program provides quality and comprehensive early childhood education to children ages 3-5.

The program also provides the following services: Health, Nutrition, Parent Involvement, Social Services, Disability Services, Safety and Family Literacy program.

In coordination with Board of Education District 19, it also offers Universal Pre-kindergarten program to 4-5 year old children. It coordinates with the Committee on Preschool Special Education in addressing the needs of children with disability. The program tops other community and outreach resources to address and enhance services to the children.

 The Impact of Head Start

The program has led in efforts to improve the cognitive abilities of young children. Research has shown that Head Start children score higher than comparable non-Head Start children in preschool achievement tests that measure these abilities. Studies also show that Head Start children perform equal to or better than their peers when they enter regular school and there are few grade retentions and special class placements. Direct involvement of parents in Head Start planning and policy-making has given families a greater role in the development of their children.

Organization and Volunteers Help Head Start

Over the years, volunteers have played an important part in our Head Start program. High school and college students, parents of Head Start children, homemakers, retired senior citizens – all kinds of people have offered their much needed help to the program.

Volunteers assist in the classroom; help in the preparation of meals; assist in the supervision of children on field trips and visits to the community; conduct workshops and training for the parents; help renovate and decorate the center; and help recruit children to the program.

Community organizations help provide a wide array of services to the program including medical and dental examinations. These services and the time spent by volunteers go toward 20% non-federal share of the budget.
