Uplifting Lives & Rebuilding Communities

YouthBuild is a comprehensive youth and community development program.

YouthBuild addresses several core issues facing our youth and our community: Education, Housing, Jobs and Leadership Development.

The YouthBuild Program works with young people (between the ages of 16-24) who have dropped out of school, preparing them for careers in construction by employing them as trainees in the rehabilitation of vacant buildings/apartments. During the time of their training, the young people alternate between off-site weeks of academics and job skills training and counseling with on site vocational education and construction related jobs.

The trainees also help to renovate office space in the agency's buildings that house our programs. They have built food pantries in our Dean Street and Scatter Site programs. Trainees also help to renovate specific areas/rooms in community homeowner's houses.  In return, these homeowners rent their available apartments to low-income and homeless families.

It is an alternative school, in which participants spend 50% of their program time participating in vocational and remedial education, preparing for a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), and some of the participants will choose to enter college after program graduation.

It is a job-training program, in which young people receive on-site training on a closely supervised construction site. Skills (such as demolition, rough carpentry, framing, taping, blue print reading) will be taught during 50% of their time in the program.

75% of our trainees must be very low-income which is below 50% of the median income.

It is a leadership development program, which is designed to develop employment and leadership skills. Examples of such activities include participation on a community task force, youth council, and other basic involvement as peer counselors and tutors.

Participants must be committed to learning new skills and maintaining good attendance.

Urban Strategies YouthBuild's goal is to break the cycle of illiteracy and homelessness.

YouthBuild allows us to accomplish this by teaching each student a skill and allowing him or her an opportunity to earn a diploma.

YouthBuild affords young adults a second chance in life to become productive individuals, without dependence on public assistance. As part of the program, an incentive in the form of a stipend allows our youth to focus on their education with some monies to take care of their personal and daily responsibilities.

As statistics show, within our Community District 16, the rates of illiteracy, unemployment, infant mortality, homelessness, substance abuse and pregnancy have reached an overwhelming rate per capita. We are committed to breaking this cycle. Urban Strategies YouthBuild is dedicated to the betterment of the families and communities we serve. We are gaining ground in improving the quality of life.
